VSC to Host Himalayan Artists
VSC to Host Himalayan Artists in 2008
The Vermont Studio Center is pleased to announce a new residency program for Himalayan artists. VSC, in partnership with The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, will host two mid-career visual artists of Himalayan origin for two-month residencies during the year 2008.
Residents will be provided with a private studio and comfortable housing, three excellent meals daily, uninterrupted working time and space, and the fellowship of professional peers. They will also have the option of counsel from distinguished Visiting Artists and the opportunity to connect with the cultural and artistic communities of New York City. Round-trip air travel and an allowance for art materials and shipping costs will be provided.
To be eligible for a Rubin Fellowship, artists must hail from the Himalayan region, which includes the countries of Bhutan, India and Nepal. In addition, Tibetan ethnic artists living in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and other parts of China, as well as Tibetan members of the Diaspora living in other countries, are encouraged to apply. The fellowship is geared toward artists from these regions whose work responds to or engages with traditional forms of Himalayan art. Interested artists should submit their applications by February 15, 2008.
The mission of The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation is to support innovative efforts to make social organizations and institutions more effective and more responsive to a broad range of human needs, and to empower individuals to develop their full potential. One area of particular interest is the peoples and the arts of the Himalayas. The Vermont Studio Center is an international creative community that has been host to more than 100 international artists each year--from Argentina to Zimbabwe--since the establishment of the prestigious Freeman Fellowship Program for Asian Art in 1994.

It seems wonderful program. I beleive it will preserve art in its true form. Since I am Master's degree student of Buddhist studies in Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, I see need of this type of program. Further, I am also an artist of traditional Tibetan thangka painting and also working as a manager of Tibetan, Sherpa and Tamang thangka artist's cooperative (Visit: www.thangkatushita.com), I would like to encourage your center to continue this type of program. I will inform my cooperative members also to participate in such type of program. I wish for success!!

Truth is not necessarily visible and what is not visible might be truth. Ultimate reality is beyond the reach of ordinary people’s perception. I have tried to present the very truth in my works. To present the social reality and the condition of the environment in symbols and images in the identity of an artist. I’d like to work on the reality where I stand. Thought centered on the local reality, my art also has its global dimension sound in one way of the other, and it is related to the word phenomena. Some of my pictures and religion themes express the close relation between man and the religion he or she follows. Some others depict the mutual cooperation and understanding among the focus is an environment. Since, in my works, I attach more importance to expression rather than the subject matter, it could be said that variation of expression in my specialty.
The fact that art indicates the time and the society that reveals in my works. The twelve- year long conflict could be in resemblance with the conflicts of other countries. It is evident that my works on the theme of the present issues to some extent have had a positive effect on the social transformation. Certainly, there works have appealed to the hearts of the low and the high alike. The depiction of the deep torture of this unprecedented conflict in my work has made people sincere and serious about the society and the future.
