VSC Literature in Translation Program
A joint project of the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers (ALSCW) and the Vermont Studio Center (VSC)
Launched in 2009, the ALSCW/VSC Literature in Translation Program brings writers and translators to the Vermont Studio Center for month-long residencies of intensive solitary work, collaboration, creative fellowship, and bilingual readings. In 2009, writers from Guatemala, China, and Poland, as well as several translators, have taken part in the LiT program.
Over the past 15 years, the Studio Center has welcomed more than 700 visual artists from more than 40 countries for residencies amidst VSC’s global community of creative peers; the presence of these extraordinary visual artists provides an ideal context for the creation of an international program that extends that intercultural artistic dialogue to our writing program.
Literature in Translation Forum
The centerpiece of the ALSC/VSC Literature in Translation program is an annual translation forum led by a different writer and translator each year. A distinguished writer spends a week at the Studio Center as a Visiting Writer, and is joined for three days by his or her American translator. Together they lead a community conversation on translation, including informal meetings and a more formal public presentation in the Lowe Lecture Hall.
The Literature in Translation Program is made possible by the generosity of individual patrons and our partner organizations. Fellowships for translators, writers from specific countries, and members of ALSC are currently being sought to ensure broad participation in this program. For more information, contact VSC’s Writing Program Director, Gary Clark.
