ArtistTimothy Hyman

Timothy Hyman was born in 1946 and trained as a painter at the Slade (1963-7). Among his nine London solo shows since 1981, five have been at Austin/Desmond, most recently, The Man Inscribed with London, in October 2009. He has also exhibited widely in group shows and internationally, notably in Italy and India. His paintings and drawings are represented in many public collections, including The Arts Council Collection, The British Museum, The Contemporary Art Society, Deutsche Bank, The Government Art Collection, Los Angeles County Museum, The Museum of London, and Brighton, Bristol, Lincoln, Sheffield and Swindon art galleries.

In the late 1970s he began to write in London Magazine, and was a Contributing Editor to Artscribe. In 1979 he curated the controversial exhibition Narrative Paintings (ICA, Arnolfini, etc.). He developed close friendships with Indian painters and in 1998 published a book on Bhupen Khakhar. Since 1990  he has contributed many articles to the Times Literary Supplement. His monographs on Bonnard  and on Sienese Painting  are published by Thames and Hudson. He curated the Hayward Gallery touring exhibition Carnivalesque and in 2001 was lead curator for the Tate’s Stanley Spencer retrospective.
