Sarah Meyers

During her residency at the Studio Center, Sarah Meyers said she was able to better understand what kind of artist she is through comparisons with the work of other artists around her: “I haven’t always connected with other artists.  I love it here and am amazed and surprised by how talented and friendly other artists are.  It is most useful to take advantage of people around me to get feedback.”

The Vermont landscape was also inspirational during her residency.  Sarah adheres organic materials onto the surface of her canvasses, setting the flowers and leaves into the paint and conducting maintenance by painting over them with acrylics to preserve them and to revive the color as they begin to decompose.  These paintings are “emotional portraits” that deal with concepts of life and death, with what is beautiful and ugly.

Getting out of her physical space in order to respond to a different environment helped her integrate an earlier style of painting with her current work, she said.
