Travel to VSC

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Plan to arrive on the first day of your residency session. On scheduled arrival days our office is open 1:00–4:00 p.m. to welcome new residents. If you are arriving by car, please arrive during these hours to check in. A staff member will greet you and lead you to your room and studio. On arrival Sundays, there will be tours at 3:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., a reception at 5:30 p.m., and an opening dinner at 6:00 p.m.. (For mid-session arrivals, there is a 4:30 p.m. Saturday tour and 1:00 p.m. Monday tour.) Departure is on the last date of your residency session - please plan to be out of your studio and room by 9 a.m. (To verify your arrival and departure dates, see the calendar) Vermont is a popular year-round vacation area—make arrangements for travel as soon as possible. Please complete and return your Travel Form at least 4 weeks in advance of your arrival.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE SHUTTLE
The Arrival/Departure Shuttle, which provides group transportation to and from the Burlington airport as well as the train and bus stations, is the least expensive way to make the final leg of your journey to the Studio Center. Burlington is about an hour drive away from Johnson; Waterbury and Essex are about 45 minutes away. The shuttle fee is $20 per trip (nonrefundable).

Wheelchair accessible shuttles are available; please inform the Travel Coordinator and indicate on your Travel Form if you need this service.

On the official arrival day, the shuttle is able to accommodate arrivals before 4 p.m. by plane or bus. On the official departure day, the shuttle operates between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.; please schedule your plane, train, or bus to depart after 9:30 a.m. on this day. There is a two-piece luggage maximum on the VSC Shuttle. All other luggage or supplies should be shipped. (See Shipping.)

To take advantage of the Shuttle, reservations must be made with VSC, and paid for, four weeks in advance of your arrival date. Arrivals after the 4:00 p.m. shuttle will require that you arrange for a taxi at your own expense ($60-$90 generally). For questions, travel plan changes, or to make a reservation for the Shuttle, contact the Travel Coordinator at 802-635-2727 x211 or travel@vermontstudiocenter.org.

PLANE AND BUS
Burlington International Airport (BTV) is serviced by Continental, Delta, USAir, United, and JetBlue, among other carriers. Greyhound Bus lines and Vermont Transit provide service to the Burlington bus terminal.

TRAIN
Amtrak services this area of Vermont with the Vermonter Line. Make your train arrival reservations to the Waterbury-Stowe, Vermont (WAB) Station. Because there is only one train arrival each day, please schedule your train arrival for Saturday evening only, for both regular and mid-session arrivals, to take our VSC shuttle. Plan your train departure on the morning of your official departure day to depart from the Essex Junction, Vermont train station (ESX).

A few days before departure, there will be a meeting with all those interested in shipping materials by UPS. Any Resident shipping via UPS must prepare his or her packages according to the UPS guidelines. Shipping fees must be paid before you leave and before the packages are shipped out.

Visual Artists

Our five studio buildings are open 24 hours a day. Each provides residents with 250–350 sq. ft. private studios with abundant natural and artificial light. When leaving late at night, please turn off the lights and make sure the door locks behind you. Some studio buildings have open ceilings for better air and heat circulation. For this reason, no open music is allowed in studios, so be sure to bring your headphones. Also, please respect your fellow artists’ need for quiet, and socialize only in the lounge areas.

PAINTING AND MIXED-MEDIA STUDIOS
Each is supplied with an easel, rolling work cart with hasp for a padlock, stool, chair, ample wall space and a large table for flat work.

THE SCULPTURE SHOP
The Schultz Sculpture Building is equipped with stationary power tools, welding equipment and hand tools. The Firehouse Studio houses a 24" diameter, low fire electric kiln. Sculptors should bring specialized equipment and any hand tools they use frequently. A list of equipment and facilities is available—please call the office to request a copy if you have not received it.

PRINTMAKING STUDIOS
Located on the first floor of the Barbara White Studio Building, these studios are for use only by artists in residence as printmakers. The press room is a functional space for up to three printmakers with adjacent private studios. The shop is set up for monoprinting, wood block, linoleum, and collagraph printing. Printers should have prior printing knowledge and expect to work independently. A list of equipment and facilities is available—please call the office to request a copy if you have not received it.

DARKROOMS
Equipped for black and white printing only, they are located in the basements of the Wolf Kahn and Barbara White Studio Buildings. We have two darkrooms for two photography residents per month. Photography residents should receive a list of supplied equipment with this handbook. Photographers should bring their own chemicals and paper.

LIFE DRAWING STUDIO
Located in the Wolf Kahn Studio Building, the studio offers a model for three hours each weekday for independent work. Residents determine the length and types of poses. We ask those working in the Life Drawing Studio to please follow these guidelines: treat the model with respect and consideration, do not touch the model to describe poses, do not take photographs of the model. Out of respect for the model and others working in the life room, please keep talking and coming and goings to a minimum.

If you have any problems or questions related to one of the models, please contact the office. A list of models available for professional private modeling is also available.

VENTILATION
In the visual art studios, doors and windows are generally closed in the winter to conserve heat. Please show consideration for your neighbors when choosing how you use your art materials. Fixatives and other aerosols should only be sprayed outside. We require that painters use odorless turpentine substitutes, which are available in the Studio Store at cost. If you have any questions or concerns about any products or techniques you plan to employ while here, please call us.

ART SUPPLIES
The Studio Store at VSC is a fully stocked art supply store, selling paint, brushes, and mediums from such product lines as Holbein, Gamblin, Old Holland, Williamsburg, Sennelier, and Golden. High quality drawing, watercolor and printmaking papers and pads are available. Product lines are discounted 20-40% off their list prices. The Studio Store also carries a variety of canvas and stretchers as well as odorless solvents and printing inks.

The Studio Store is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Sundays 12:00–5:00 p.m., and on the first Monday and Tuesday of each session from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.Accounts can be opened on arrival and are payable at the end of your Residency. Personal checks and Visa/MasterCard are accepted. Please call the Studio Store if you have further questions: 802-635-2203, or visit their website.

SCULPTURE SUPPLIES
Limited supplies of plaster, clay, wax and welding gases are available in the sculpture studio and a schedule of prices is posted. We do not supply rubber for moldmaking. Many basic materials are available at local businesses which are listed on page 17. Some of these businesses are Johnson Farm and Garden, Parker and Stearns Lumber and Leo’s Welding Supply. Due to the open nature of the shop we can not accommodate polyester resin or the use of other toxic materials.

DOCUMENTATION
Digital photos or slides of your work here are available through Howard Romero, a local photographer. Each month he also takes a VSC Residents group photo and makes prints available for purchase.

Writers

MAVERICK WRITING STUDIOS
All Writing Residents are assigned a studio in the Maverick Studios, which opened in January 2007 and is the first new building to be constructed by VSC. Each of the 16 studios overlooks the Gihon River, and comes equipped with a large desk, a surge protector/power strip, a bookshelf, an adjustable-height desk chair, a reading chair, a cork board, a floor lamp, a desk lamp, and individual heat and light controls; the studios are environmentally friendly, wheelchair-accessible, and centrally located on the VSC campus. Maverick Studios include a network for accessing both the internet and a shared printer; access to the network requires a standard CAT-5 ethernet cable, which writers need to bring with them. The internet access and printers available in Maverick are only for use by residents who have studios in the building. Questions regarding the writing facilities and program can be directed to the Writing Program Director Gary Clark.

WRITERS CONFERENCE ROOM/LIBRARY
The ground floor of Mason House serves as a Writers’ Conference Room and Library (see Public Buildings). It contains the wonderful new Katherine Porter Collection (donated by painter and VSC Visiting Artist Katherine Porter), as well as The Vermont Studio Center Collection of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, anthologies, and reference books. In addition, the library contains back issues of Poets & Writers and various literary journals, and an information board with postings of local and national literary interest. The conference space is the location of the Visiting Writer craft talks and is available for informal gatherings and work-sharing among writing residents.

PRINTER ACCESS FOR WRITERS
Two printers (one per floor) are available for writers only in the Maverick Writing Studios and are networked via the ethernet connection in each studio. Printer drivers can be downloaded directly from the Internet (Gary Clark will forward complete information prior to your arrival). We also have copies of the drivers on disk, but cannot guarantee they will work with your machine. While our network is secure, because of the risk of virus transmission, VSC recommends that you have virus protection software installed on your computer. For information on computer rental and repair, see Local Services.

STATIONERY SUPPLIES
Reams of paper, pens, disks, ethernet cables, etc. can be purchased at the Johnson State College Bookstore or Ward’s Office Systems (see
Local Services) in Morrisville, a ten-minute drive. There is also a Staples office supply store in Burlington, a one-hour drive.

EBENEZER BOOKS
Locally-owned, independent bookstore Ebenezer Books can order titles from any of the major distributors and have them delivered to the store within a few days for pick up. Please call them for more information: 802-635-7472.

Public Buildings

THE RED MILL
The VSC campus center contains the dining room, residents' lounge, galleries, and administrative offices.

VSC OFFICE
The office is open from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) on weekdays. It is located on the second floor of the Red Mill. The number is 802-635-2727. The fax number is 802-635-2730. Office printers and computers are not available for resident use. Computers are available at Johnson Public Library.

RED MILL GALLERY
The Red Mill Gallery hosts exhibits by staff, trustees, administration and international artists whose full fellowship includes an exhibition component.

RESIDENT GALLERY
The Resident Gallery is an informal area in the lounge adjoining the dining room. VSC Founder Louise von Weise coordinates ongoing exhibits of work by current Residents. You are welcome and encouraged to show your work. To make arrangements, speak with Louise during your residency.

LOWE LECTURE HALL
Most lectures, readings, and slide talks are held in this building. Please arrive on time for these events; a quiet entry into this historic building can be difficult. Several resident slide talks and readings are scheduled each month. The hall is equipped with an Assisted Listening System. Please see the VSC staff-person running the event for assistance.

LIBRARIES
VSC’s small libraries are located in the Red Mill Lounge and in the Mason House Conference room. They include a variety of art and contemporary literature books. Since they are not lending libraries, we ask that books be used on site, and not taken to studios or residences.
The Johnson Public Library and Johnson State College's Library Learning Center are local lending libraries (see Johnson State College and Local Services).

MEDITATION BUILDING
The small red meditation building (on the lawn next to the Schultz Sculpture Studio) is open 24 hours each day for all forms of contemplative practice. Group meditation is scheduled every morning from 7:30–8:00 a.m. for any who wish to participate. During the first week of the session, Founder Jon Gregg offers a brief talk on meditation and studio practice.

YOGA
The YOGA*VSC studio is located one block away and offers daily yoga classes and workshops at a reduced rate for VSC residents. We welcome beginning to advanced students. Click here for a class schedule or email  yoga@vermontstudiocenter.org for more information.

Facilities

HOUSING
VSC provides each resident with a modest, comfortable room in one of seven large VSC houses in the village of Johnson. Accommodations are in single rooms with shared bathrooms. Houses are simply furnished and bed linens, pillows, blankets, towels, and a weekly linen service is provided. VSC does not offer in-house laundry facilities. For local laundromats, see
Local Services. You may want to bring an alarm clock. Out of respect for your housemates and writers working in their rooms, please do not play open music in any of the houses. We are unable to accommodate spouses, children, pets, or overnight guests. A list of local bed and breakfasts and motels is available upon request or on our website.

MEALS/DINING ROOM
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided seven days a week in the dining room by our chef Mark Hallett. Along with daily entrees, the menu includes desserts, soups and a full salad bar. We are not able to provide for special dietary requirements.

While you may linger in the dining room as long as you like, we ask that you bus your dishes promptly so your fellow residents with kitchen duties may return to their studios. We also ask that there be no cell phones or laptops in the dining room.

PARKING
Cars should be parked in the main parking lots by the Kahn Studios, Schultz Sculpture Building, and Corner House. See the campus map for the designated parking areas. We ask residents not to park in the Red Mill courtyard which is reserved for employee and visitor vehicles only.

ACCESSIBILITY
VSC welcomes artists and writers with disabilities. Upon acceptance of your VSC residency, please make us aware of any accessibility needs as soon as possible so that we may do our best to accommodate you. VSC is in the process of updating its Access Implementation Plan in accordance with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. We appreciate and encourage feedback from residents to inform and guide these efforts. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the campus and our programs in regard to your accessibility needs, please contact Kathy Black at (802) 635-2727.

Communication

MAIL
Mail should be addressed to your name, c/o VSC, P.O. Box 613, Johnson, VT 05656
Private carriers (Fed-Ex, UPS, etc) should be addressed to your name c/o VSC, 80 Pearl St, Johnson, VT 05656
Mail for residents is placed in the dining hall mailbox each day at lunch. You may leave stamped outgoing mail in the office during office hours. UPS packages are dropped off in the lobby of Wolf Kahn Studios. The Johnson Post Office is a short walk away.

INTERNET ACCESS
Internet access is available to residents 24 hours a day on one older Mac and one PC located in the Red Mill lounge. These are shared computers; please be mindful and limit your use to 20 minutes when others are waiting. You may also connect your laptop to the Internet directly in the Red Mill lounge. To do so, you will need a standard CAT-5 ethernet cable. Office computers, printers and scanners are not available for resident use. The Johnson town library and the JSC library also have internet access. (see
Local Services)

WIRELESS NETWORK
The Red Mill building hosts a wireless network that is accessible to all VSC community members. To access the wireless network, you will need to have a wireless card and its software properly installed on your laptop. Please set this up before you arrive as we do not have technical advisors on staff to assist you.

TELEPHONES
In the spirit of retreat and creative focus, telephone access is limited. For outgoing calls, public phones are available in each studio building and at the top of the stairs outside of the VSC office. Dial 9 for an outside line. Local calls are free, but a calling card or credit card is needed for long distance calls. Phone cards are available at the post office, the JSC bookstore and Maplefields Mobil Station. Please do not receive incoming calls on the studio phones as the artists in the studios closest to the phone must then answer them. Public phones are also located on Main Street at the Maplefields and D. J.’s Deli. VSC office phones are only available to Residents in emergencies. Some calls within Vermont are long-distance (i.e. Burlington). A wheelchair accessible phone is available in the Kahn Gym.

CELL PHONES
Because the village of Johnson is located in a valley, cell phone coverage is limited. Most cell phones will not work here and signals are often intermittent. However, some providers, including AT&T and Verizon, are more likely to work here than others.

PHONE MESSAGES
Our office will take phone messages for residents during business hours. On evenings and weekends an answering machine receives messages. All phone messages, faxes and emails are put in the dining hall mailbox. Please be sure to check this regularly for any messages. The answering machine also lists emergency numbers if you must be reached in an emergency.

VSC Press

Founded on the premise of Artists Supporting Artists, the mission of the VSC Press is to create outstanding prints by prominent artists and to make these prints available to VSC residents and alumni at substantially reduced rates and raise funds for residency fellowships here at the Studio Center.

The VSC press provides individual collectors, public, and teaching collections operating within strict budgets an excellent opportunity to purchase prints from a broad spectrum of important contemporary American artists at exceptional prices.

A catalog featuring a selection of our prints is currently available. If you would like a catalog, to view a selection of works, or are interested in purchasing a print, call the office or email development@vermontstudiocenter.org.

Johnson State College (JSC)

The Library Learning Center at nearby JSC extends library privileges to all VSC Residents, allowing access to the 5,000 volumes in their art and literature library. This is a courtesy extended by the College. Please return all borrowed books to the Johnson State College Library before you leave VSC.

The College Gym and SHAPE facility are available to VSC residents. There are three different types of passes available; a one month membership ($50/adults and $35/seniors), a 10 pass card ($50/adults and $35/seniors), and a day pass ($10/day/adults and $8/seniors). The facility is equipped with a swimming pool, weight room, racquetball court, and aerobics room. There is also free access to outdoor tennis courts, cross country skiing and hiking trails on the college grounds. For more information about hours, facilities, and classes visit the www.jsc.edu or call 802-635-2356.

Weather

Summer, Spring, and Fall temperatures in Vermont range from 35–95°F (4–35°C). Since most summer weather is moderate, no VSC buildings are air-conditioned. If you wish to bring a fan for your studio or room, you are welcome to do so. For summer's cool nights and sudden storms, we recommend a sweater and lightweight jacket. The college pool and state park swimming areas are nearby, so you might want to bring a bathing suit.

Winter temperatures range from -30–40°F (-34–4°C). All residences and studios are insulated and heated for this climate. Blankets are provided in the rooms, but because each person's comfort level differs, you may want to bring (or ship) a favorite blanket or comforter. In our effort to reduce our impact on the environment, we appreciate your help with making sure doors and windows are kept closed. Thermostats are balanced for the entire building. Please contact the maintenance staff if the temperature in your room or studio needs adjustment. For the winter, plan to bring warm clothes, winter outerwear, and boots for snow. Layered clothing, long underwear, and sweaters are especially useful in keeping you warm, and formal clothing is never required. If you are driving during the winter months, it is essential that your car have a good battery, antifreeze, proper snow tires, and an ice scraper. For information on Vermont's weather, visit www.vermontvacation.com/weather.

Additional Information

DRUG-FREE/ALCOHOL POLICY
It is the policy of the Vermont Studio Center to be a drug-free environment. We also ask that Residents consume alcohol responsibly. Abusers of these policies will be asked to leave.

GATHERINGS AND PARTIES
Planned or impromptu gatherings are best held in the dining area and lounges, so as not to disturb fellow residents or town neighbors. For safety purposes, we ask that there be no parties or alcohol consumption in the sculpture areas.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY
The Vermont Studio Center will not tolerate sexual harassment of or by members of its community. Sexual harassment is illegal and is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment. The Vermont Studio Center is an artists' community that aspires to nurture and support the creative spirit. This mission can be realized only in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Actions which diminish such an atmosphere will not be condoned nor tolerated. Any reports of harassment should be directed to George Pearlman or Kathy Black.

TRAVEL TO MONTREAL, QUÉBEC
Montreal is a two hour drive from Johnson. If you think that you may want to visit Canada, on your own, you will need to bring your passport, as well as any special visa documentation you may have. The driver will need an appropriate auto insurance card. If you are not a US Citizen, please call the appropriate consulates before you come to VSC to find out if you need anything else. Border crossing phone numbers are in Driving Directions.

SECURITY
At check-in everyone receives keys for their residence and studio buildings. Keys lock the front doors of the studio and residence buildings. There are rolling lockers in the studio for your materials. If you wish to lock them, please bring a padlock. While we suggest that valuables be left at home to lessen any concern you may have, we can lock valuables in the office.

WORK-EXCHANGE ASSIGNMENTS
Most of the work assignments are in food service with a few in housekeeping and the office. If you have a preference for shift hours or work assignments, or if you have a specialized skill in one of these areas, please let us know in advance. Although we can’t promise a specific duty, we will try to accommodate your preferences.

SMOKING REGULATIONS
By VT Fire Marshall regulations, smoking is not permitted in any VSC building. Green ashcans are placed outside of all buildings and residences. Please use them.

Emergencies

Please report emergencies to the office during business hours, or after hours to George Pearlman. Due to insurance regulations, any accident that takes place on VSC property must be examined immediately by qualified medical personnel.
