Kyle Booten

Kyle Booten, the first Helen Zell Fellow to be sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Creative Writing Program, says his VSC residency has encouraged him to be reflective as well as productive.  “Usually the majority of my ‘writing time’ is the actual production stage, typing or scribbling away,” said Kyle.

“But at VSC I have had the time to slow down and examine the results of various modes or styles of composition I had adopted more or less unconsciously.”

Being surrounded by visual artists has also helped his thinking: “Just spending time with these artists--adjusting my ear to their vocabularies, observing the way they deal with the problems specific to their media--has helped me to think through my process of writing.”
