Joseph McElroy is the author of nine novels including A Smuggler's Bible, Lookout Cartridge, Women and Men, Actress in the House, Plus, and the soon forthcoming Cannonball (about the Iraq war). His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Antaeus, TriQuarterly, Fiction, and other magazines. A book of essays (Exponential) appeared soon after 9/11, and a non-fiction book about water is nearly completed (he's teaching a course called The Meaning of Water this year at Temple University). He has received the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and fellowships from the N.E.A., Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Ingram Merrill foundations. Professor Emeritus in the City University of New York, he has taught at Johns Hopkins, Columbia, Washington University, Columbia, Northwestern, and the University of Paris.
