Johnson, VT
The Studio Center's central location in the village of Johnson provides Residents walking access to the post office, lumber yard, supermarket, hair salon, a diner, laundromat, bookstore, coffee shop, thrift shop and Johnson State College. A large hardware store is a 2-mile drive away.
As a unique institution within the local community and the state, VSC serves the community in a number of ways:
- VSC staff artist Arista Alanis teaches art classes at the local Johnson Elementary School, as part of a program founded in 1995 by George and Andrea Pearlman. VSC International Residents are invited to participate in special projects with the Arista’s students.
- Statewide, VSC offers an annual Vermont Artist Week at a nominal fee for 50 artists and writers throughout the state.
- 72 Visiting Artists' Lectures and Visiting Writers' Readings are presented free and open to the public as well as 40 exhibitions per year in the Red Mill Gallery.
- The Studio Center takes an active roll in historic preservation and environmental conservation efforts.
- Numerous VSC staff are active in town and village government and volunteer organizations.
- In 1998, VSC established a community arts program.
Although we are a tax-exempt nonprofit institution, VSC voluntarily pays full property taxes on all its campus buildings to help support the town of Johnson.
