Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe is a painter and theorist.  His most recent one-person show was in New York in 2008 (Alexander Gray Gallery).  Other recent shows include a 20-year retrospective (Ulrich Museum, University of Kansas 2006,) and several group exhibitions, among them Drawing, Stretching and Fainting in Coils, curated by Diana Thater (Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, 2007,) Extreme Abstraction (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, 2005) and 100 Artists See God, curated by John Baldessari and Meg Cranston for Independent Curators International (2004-5). Public collections containing his work include the Albright-Knox Art Gallery; The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; MoCA, Los Angeles; MoCA, Miami; and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Los Angeles and Minneapolis. The author of Immanence and Contradiction (1986),  Beyond Piety (1995) Beauty and the Contemporary Sublime (1999) and (with Frank Gehry) Frank Gehry, The City and Music (2000) and numerous essays, he has been awarded NEA Fellowships in painting (1979, 1989) and criticism (1974), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1997), the CAA’s Mather Award (1998), and a Francis Greenberger Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts (2001). Born in England in 1945 and a U.S. resident since 1968, he is Chair of the Graduate Art Program at Art Center, Pasadena.
