Guitarist Frisell, VSC's First Musician in Residence
World renowned jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell performed at the Vermont Studio Center with his 858 Quartet on Thursday, October 21st; the performance marked the conclusion of a month-long VSC residency for the composer. Johnson's Historic 1832 Opera House--aka the Studio Center's Lowe Lecture Hall--was filled with a capacity crowd of 125 to hear Mr. Frisell's quartet debut the new compositions in advance of a West Coast tour featuring the new material.
Mr. Frisell was the Studio Center's first resident musician-composer as part of a pilot program to bring musicians and other creative thinkers into the VSC community of visual artists and writers. For his final week in Johnson, Mr. Frisell was joined by his quartet members Jenny Scheinman (violin), Eyvind Kang (viola), and Hank Roberts (cello), who rehearsed the new compositions in advance of the debut performance at VSC.
Immediately following the residency, the 858 Quartet travelled to San Francisco and played sold out concerts in the Bay Area and other locations on the west coast before entering the studio to record an album of the new compositions.
