Exhibit to feature the work of Elizabeth Newman & Ed Smith

Posted on October 4, 2011 by VSC

Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct. 15th at 7:00 pm

The Vermont Studio Center will be hosting an exhibition of artists Elizabeth Newman and Ed Smith in Gallery II.

Long time friends and admirers of each other and their artistic stance, this exhibition is the first pairing of the two artists. A long association, keen appreciation for the mission of the Vermont Studio Center and the artists working there, brought Newman and Smith together for exhibition.

Ms. Newman’s work has been written about by Holland Carter in the NY Times as “…the installation has far more grit than a simple list of its contents might suggest. In Charleston, Miss Newman's work appeared in a 19th-century town house, and many of her references were to the relationship of black "mammies" to their white charges. This subtext has been more or less dropped in the translation to New York, and the objects themselves have gained in exoticism and ambiguity.”

Ed Smith’s work is primarily involved with mythic and heroic aspects of the Artist and man. His work has been written about in SCULPTURE Magazine by Robert C. Morgan,  “…the monoprints, titled Disasters, are clearly a reference to Goya’s “Disasters of War,” updated in terms of the present. Much the same could be said about Republican Landscapes, a more ironic title, which essentially deals with the same kind of horror and ambiguity. In either case, the landscape is neither settling nor romantic. The mood is a haunted one. Smith has a way of instilling feeling in the transfer of monoprint imagery that speaks both directly and indirectly.

This pairing of distinctly different visions offers the opportunity to look into the creative process as well as the exchange and admiration these artists have for each other and their unique vision of the past, present and future.

The show opens on Saturday, October 15th at 7:00 pm and will run until November 13th in VSC’s Gallery II which is located in the Kahn Studio Complex.

Under the direction of G. Todd Haun, The Red Mill Gallery & Gallery II exhibition schedule features VSC International and American residents, staff, alumni, and local artists. Shows are open to the public at no charge. These events are kindly made possible by donations from VSC members, friends, and benefactors.
