Announcing the John Fitzpatrick/Henry David Thoreau Poetry Fellowship Program at the Vermont Studio Center

Posted on March 11, 2010 by VSC

John FitzpatrickThe Vermont Studio Center is pleased to announce the creation of the John Fitzpatrick/Henry David Thoreau Fellowships, which will be awarded to two poets over the coming year.  This program, which has been established by poet and VSC alum John Fitzpatrick, is intended to support poets whose work is a living extension of the literary tradition embodied in the work of Henry David Thoreau and reflects the focus on nature in John Fitzpatrick's own poetry.

The application deadline for the Fitzpatrick/Thoreau Fellowships is June 15th, 2010.  One poet will receive a fellowship to cover the full cost of a month-long residency; a second will receive a partial fellowship.  Poets who believe they are eligible for the award should make the appropriate note on their applications (see application instructions), but all poets deemed eligible for the awards by the selection committee will be considered.

In addition to these two Fellowships, John Fitzpatrick has created the Henry David Thoreau studio within VSC’s Maverick Writing Studios in lasting recognition of the simplicity, discipline, reverence, and intimacy with nature embodied and shared by the Vermont Studio Center and the work and life of Henry David Thoreau.

All Fitzpatrick/Thoreau Fellowships applicants who do not receive one of the two awards will also be considered for any other VSC award for which they may be eligible, as well as VSC grants and financial assistance toward the cost of a stay at the VSC.

To apply for the John Fitzpatrick/Henry David Thoreau Fellowships, visit our Apply page to download an application and see details on all of the other available VSC fellowships (June 15 fellowships will be posted in the spring).
