is the author of four novels, three short story collections, and a volume of personal essays. His most recent books include the story collection Late in the Standoff and the novel Axeman's Jazz. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Georgia Review, The Southern Review and many other journals, and he has received fellowships from the NEA and the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. Currently he serves as Chair of the English Department at Oregon State University.
